Designer Skin Black
« on: October 20, 2008, 06:49:00 PM »
Well, after hearing at the show how DS Black was the number two selling lotion of the year, I ordered some packets and put one bottle on the shelf to see what the response would be. I got my first response today. "That's a really good lotion. I just bought one on e-bay for less than $40 including shipping" Great! Sure enough, when I went to e-bay it was all over the place. Guess I'll put it on sale for 60% off.

tj I hear you. It certainly can be bought for cheap online. Free shipping would make it worse. But most people that come in haven't got lotion on them I'd suspect. Try to sell them something that improves the tan. $100 retail for a lotion is just crazy.

Most salons including mine make the majority of the money selling tans not lotion. The lotion accounts for maybe 15-20% of total sales. We did sell a lot of Black this past season and I suspect their will be another hit like this coming from Designer Skin. With Black you couldn't get it online back during season so everyone had to buy it at a salon. The internet is a reality. Black is carried by amazon.com so it is not going away and clearly is supported by the manufacturers. We give a discount to people that buy tans that works well for us.

Black has a great following.
Customers come in to buy this off the street and not tan in my salon.
$102 a bottle...3x + mark up..
Get them to try it....better yet...have your staff try it and be able to compare to a lotion in your store.

We sold out of it weekly last season.  Just placed another order to stock up for this year.

However, I do think DC Code is much better than Black.  Both similar price points.
Don't sell by price.  Present on results and what they want to achieve while tanning in your salon.  Price shouldn't be included in any presentation.
