Vitamin D Deficient America
« on: September 16, 2008, 07:06:14 PM »
If one regularly avoids sunlight exposure, research indicates a necessity to supplement with at least 5,000 units (IU) of vitamin D daily. To obtain this amount from milk one would need to consume 50 glasses. With a multivitamin more than 10 tablets would be necessary. Neither is advisable.

The skin produces approximately 20,000 IU vitamin D in response 20–30 minutes summer sun exposure—100 times more than the US government's recommendation of 200 IU per day!

There are 3 ways for adults to insure adequate levels of vitamin D:

    * regularly receive midday sun exposure in the late spring, summer, and early fall, exposing as much of the skin as possible.
    * regularly use a sun bed (avoiding sunburn) during the colder months.
    * take 5,000 IU per day for three months, then obtain a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. Adjust your dosage so that blood levels are between 50–80 ng/mL (or 125–200 nM/L) year around.

Thanks for the very informative post. That information is great, learning about facts regarding vitamin D is one thing which this post is informative. Learning the right way to maintain and love your health is the right way to have a healthy lifestyle. I think that three ways is also based on the climate of a country because if the natural sunlight is not available, that may be the alternatives for that while maintaining it even it is off season.

I love being out in the sun. The one thing to realize is that suntan lotions while they do protect your skin, they also prevent vitamin d from being absorbed. Of course, most suntan lotion tends to wash off or be wiped off from sweat, so you probably still get vitamin d. I miss the sun in the winter and can't wait until it warms back up to go back outside. It seems vitamin d makes me happy.

Yeah this past winter I did not goto our salon much and got little tanning in.  I could tell a difference in my attitude and my energy compared to the prior winter when I made a point to go at least 1-2 a week
