Any Salon's in PA?
« on: March 15, 2010, 08:45:20 PM »
Just wondering what it requires to add hair services.   We have a large enclosed room which we currently have spray tanning in.  I know hair services would be a much better use of the space but was wondering what it would take.  I want to do it all by the book and also have a hair/tanning place across the street so if I cut corners I would be reported too.

I've checked the PA site and contacted the state but never got a good answer.

I'm not in PA but I would assume your place needs a license and then anyone who works there also needs their license.  The state is usually pretty helpful once you get ahold of them, not sure about pa.  The usually have requirements on the business layout too.  We are only a 3 station salon but we had to have a certain area to operate.

I would check your state web site.  I will bet you need someone at the salon who is responsible for the supervision of anyone else.  Now you may not need something special as the owners if you have that representative.  You also need a certain area to work in based on how many stations you have.  If you want 3 stations, you need X amount of floor space. I'd bet you end up having someone come check the place out before opening and then almost never see them again.  Make sure you also look because they will surely have equipment requirements as well.

Thanks, I might seriously look into this over the summer with the tan tax running, any seperate income is something to consider with the tan tax and FDA meetings.

I will likely skip it.  I'm not sure they extra hassle will be worth it.  Biggest thing is we'd need to find a great stylist and one who is willing to take on all the responsibility.  I'm sure we could, but after the cut they would want what would be left?  Besides I doubt we have room for more than 1 stylist

You should think about it.  I would bet hair is a better place to be than tanning anymore and also more steady

I'm reconsidering.  I have to see if our room will be ok per the hair salon code requirements.  I think I could do 1 station.  I have our aqua massage bed in there right now but I could easily move that to the side area with a nice screen.  People do not go naked and do not need a room really
