Adding a tanning bed
« on: March 14, 2010, 05:56:25 PM »
How many salons also have a tanning bed or two?  I am thinking of adding a bed.  We have an extra room and want to add a service so I thought tanning.  There are afew tanning places near us but nothing special.  I was thinking of just getting one nice bed.  There are so many beds for salon that I see so I think I can get one pretty cheap.  What should I be thinking about?  I would think I just need someone to hook it up and then one of us in the salon would help people as they want to use it.

Actually, most of the salons are not using tanning bed because it is very expensive. Many people that I encountered said that using this bed can cause cancer. However, I didn't agree with it, in fact, it protects us from ultraviolet rays.

I guess it depends on how you define expensive.  We purchased a very nice bed which should have sold for about $6000 for $1600 about 18 months ago.  It paid for itself in the 1st 9 months.  I think that is a good invesement without much risk.  At worst I would have lost maybe half.  In terms of running the bed, it's not much.  If you do not have the electric to support a bed, that is where you can run into a good amount of money.

Yes, many will say it causes cancer.  We are limited on what we can say but we can help educate them.  Sadly many people feel this way not understanding that the upside of tanning far outweighs not.  Whenever someone says tanning cause cancer I am quick to correct them that Overexposure has been show to potentialy cause cancer in some people which is why we also recommend moderation.  There is no study that shows moderate tanning causes cancer.  Never been done. I put it back on them to show me that study.

Yeah most hair/nails do not have tanning but that does not mean you can't.  I would say those that do are better off overall.  You have a more diverse revenue stream.  You will be able to draw people in for one reason and they may stay for another.  It's the reason there are Spa's.  They do alot of things, not one.

That is why we added a massage bed.  We didnt want to deal with massage therapists who don't show up or are not free or just not having one so we went with a bed.  Now we have a side (though likely small) revenue stream.  It's still not up and running but it should be within the next week
